Get Started With FAFSA

Your first step in the financial aid process is submitting your FAFSA application. App State’s Federal School Code is 002906.

The federal deadline for FAFSA is June 30, 2025, though we recommend submitting your application as soon as possible, starting October 1.

Before you can complete your FAFSA, you’ll need to have access to the following items for yourself or your contributor(s):

  • W-2 and 1040 tax forms
  • Tax returns
  • Records of untaxed income and assets

North Carolina Residency

In compliance with state law, the University of North Carolina system requires students to request a residency classification from the centralized Residency Determination Service (RDS). RDS is the entity responsible for all new classifications of residency in North Carolina. As a result, all residency questions and inquiries must be directed to RDS. The contact information for the centralized RDS is:

Check out the FAQs on the RDS website for answers to the most asked questions!

Financing Your Degree with Loans and Grants

Grants

A grant is a type of financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid and is awarded based on financial need. Students can apply for state and federal grants by completing the FAFSA.

Loans

A loan is money you borrow and must pay back with interest. If you apply for financial aid, you may be offered loans as part of your school’s financial aid offer. When you receive a student loan, you’re borrowing money to attend a college or career school. Students may apply for federal loans through the FAFSA.

Financing Your Degree with Scholarships

Scholarship awards are earned by the student. These awards require individual applications and can be need-based or merit-based. Some scholarships may be renewable year-to-year if the student meets the necessary criteria.

To be eligible for transfer student scholarships, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled full time for fall semester in an on-campus or online undergraduate degree program
  • Have a minimum of 24 transferable credit hours
