Marketing is often misunderstood as a field focused mainly on selling, advertising or social media content. For Dr. Lubna Nafees, professor of marketing at Appalachian State University, it’s far more expansive — a discipline centered on understanding people, interpreting change and creating value in a rapidly evolving business world.

“Marketing today is one of the most dynamic, versatile and impactful fields in business,” Dr. Nafees said. “It sits at the intersection of strategy, creativity and analytics.”

That intersection shapes Dr. Nafees’ academic journey, research and teaching. Her work spans sustainable and conscious consumption, social networks, social media, consumer behavior, digital marketing and brand strategy. In App State’s marketing classrooms, these areas come together through applied learning, current industry examples and a strong emphasis on ethical decision-making.

A Career Built on Curiosity and Impact

Dr. Nafees’ path to academia began in India, where she developed a foundation in marketing and consumer behavior. After completing her Master of Business Administration (MBA), she initially expected to pursue a corporate career, but a market research project changed that trajectory.

While working alongside a renowned professor, Dr. Nafees saw how academic research could shape organizations, generate insight and influence decisions beyond immediate business outcomes. That experience clarified the kind of impact she wanted to make — one rooted in knowledge, inquiry and service.

“My academic journey has been shaped by a deep curiosity about how people think, decide and interact with markets — especially as technology continues to transform those interactions,” she said.

She went on to earn a PhD in consumer behavior, focusing on how people make decisions, how markets influence behavior, and how marketers can better understand the social and technological forces shaping consumer life.

Dr. Nafees also credits her family background as a defining influence. She grew up surrounded by professions rooted in service and knowledge — educators, doctors and engineers. “In many ways, choosing academia felt like a natural extension of these values,” she said.

Why Marketing Is More Than Promotion

One of Dr. Nafees’ priorities as an educator is helping students move beyond common misconceptions about marketing. Many students enter the field assuming that marketing is synonymous with advertising, promotion or persuasion. Others believe that social media familiarity alone is enough to make someone a marketer.

Dr. Nafees challenges those assumptions directly.

“Using social media is not the same as understanding how and why it works within a broader marketing ecosystem,” she said.

For students, that distinction shapes how they approach the field. Modern marketing requires knowledge of consumer psychology, segmentation, positioning, analytics, branding, digital strategy and ethics, as well as the ability to connect tactics to broader organizational goals.

“In reality, marketing is fundamentally about understanding human behavior and creating value — for consumers, organizations, and increasingly, for society at large,” Dr. Nafees explained.

A Global Perspective on Marketing Education

Dr. Nafees has taught and worked across institutions in both India and the U.S., and that experience shapes her approach at App State. She emphasizes that while marketing principles may be broadly applicable, their effectiveness depends on context, culture, economics and consumer realities.

“I strongly believe that one of the best teachers in life is travel — experiencing new cultures firsthand,” she said.

In the classroom, that perspective translates into global case examples, cross-cultural discussions and a focus on adaptability. Students are encouraged to move beyond one-size-fits-all thinking and consider how strategies must shift across markets.

She also highlights digital transformation in global contexts. In some markets, mobile-first systems, social commerce and rapid technology adoption offer valuable lessons for marketers everywhere. By comparing emerging and developed markets, students gain a wider view of innovation, consumer behavior and strategy.

“My journey across countries has helped me see marketing education not just as knowledge transfer, but as developing globally competent, thoughtful and responsible marketers,” she said.

Student-Centered, Research-Grounded Teaching: Bringing Marketing Expertise Into the Classroom

Dr. Nafees brings her expertise into the classroom through an integrated approach to marketing. Rather than treating areas such as sustainability, digital behavior and consumer culture as separate, she presents them as interconnected forces shaping the future of marketing.

Her work on sustainable and conscious consumption encourages students to think beyond sales and market share. In her courses, they examine the environmental and social consequences of marketing decisions and explore how brands can pursue growth responsibly.

Her research on social media and networks shapes how students analyze digital marketing. They may study influencer crises, online communities, follower behavior, user-generated content and algorithmic visibility — gaining a clear understanding of how consumers actively shape, challenge and reinterpret brand narratives.

“Marketing is no longer a one-way communication process; it is a dynamic, cocreated exchange,” Dr. Nafees notes.

Preparing Students for a Changing Marketing Landscape

The integrated approach to marketing education at App State is increasingly important in a field shaped by social media, artificial intelligence (AI), digital communities, data privacy, sustainability and real-time performance measurement. Dr. Nafees wants students to understand not only how to create campaigns but also how to evaluate them, adapt them and consider their broader implications.

She sees marketing as a field for students who are curious about people and motivated to solve problems, leading to careers ranging from brand management and digital strategy to marketing analytics, customer experience and entrepreneurship.

“A marketing degree does not lock students into a single path — it gives them a portfolio of skills and opportunities,” she said.

Teaching as Mentorship: Empowering Students to Lead and Make Their Mark

What Dr. Nafees finds most rewarding about teaching at App State is watching students grow into confident, thoughtful professionals. She values their curiosity, openness and willingness to connect classroom concepts to the real world.

She also sees her role as more than delivering course content. For Dr. Nafees, teaching is a form of mentorship and partnership. She wants students to feel supported and challenged as they develop confidence and begin to see new possibilities for themselves.

“For me, marketing education is not just about preparing students for jobs — it is about shaping how they think, lead and contribute in a rapidly changing world,” she said.

That sense of purpose guides her work as a scholar, teacher and mentor. Whether she’s integrating AI and digital transformation into coursework, examining sustainability and ethical consumption, or helping students develop strategic and analytical skills, Dr. Nafees remains focused on relevance, impact and student growth.
